Trendiness – A Threat to Capsule Wardrobes Everywhere

“A great piece of art is composed not just of what is in the final piece, but equally important, what is not. It is the discipline to discard what does not fit – to cut out what might have already cost days or even years of effort – that distinguishes the truly exceptional artist and marks the ideal piece of work, be it a symphony, a novel, a painting, a company or, most important of all, a life.” – Jim Collins, Management Educator

Trendiness can be the death of any capsule wardrobe. In my last post on this topic, we discussed some rules of thumb to follow when curating your capsule wardrobe:

  1. Choose a color palette and stick to it
  2. Everything in your wardrobe should pair well with at least 3 other existing items of clothing
  3. Master the art of layering

Since that post, several people have inquired about what they should leave out of their downsized closet. The answer is pretty simple. Exclude anything trendy or impractical, such as:

  • Items that are dry clean only (admittedly, I’m still working on weeding these out of my closet)
  • Bell sleeves and sweaters with fringe on the sleeves (too difficult to layer)
  • Ruffles (I’m not talking cute, feminine, accent ruffles. I’m talking those huge, dramatic ruffles that are so popular this fall)
  • Velcro (it will catch on your other items and snag them)
  • Sequins, mesh, and elastic (they fall apart, snag, or stretch over time)
  • Neon (I don’t really need to explain this one, right?)
  • Items that are low quality (after all, a capsule wardrobe is meant to save you time picking things out, but also meant to make it so you don’t need to shop as much)

  1. I have grown to hate dry clean only! I purposely look on the rare occasion that I shop now for that label. I’m losing weight and losing slowly out of my capsule, so I have had to shop recently.
